I was born in 1976 when punk formed so I think I may lay claim to having been conceived when punk was - well that is debatable, some say The Saints had already defined it about two years earlier.

I see your point in the using of a term that's basic principles of DIY are already here, I think the actual term Edupunk kind of goes against what punk stood for originally, remembering that the term punk actually brought the movement down. The classic Mr Rotten on stage in The States looking over a sea of piercings, multi-cloured mohawks and designer ripped clothing crying out "Don't you feel cheated".

Of course coming from a teaching perspective I constantly wonder at the apps we dress our Web 2.0 up in and then question what relationship it has to the content. If indeed it can be inclusive and engaging from the learner's perspective - indeed if it is then it can be DIY, frankly many students are unable or unsure at the point of learning to DIY, and to add to that many teachers are also in the same boat.

I have tried many ways to have learners facilitating their own development through similiar methods of learning but have also come across stumbling blocks, and the main being functionality - social networking plus education is flawed if there is so much "bling" compared to idealogy - when I say idealogy I refer to concepts that drive motives, such as Creative Commons, Open Source, Blogging, these all have driving concepts as Google had when it developed basic memes on dialogue, conversation etc - and as far as protecting speech, "flag" options, content warnings, "review later" policies ...

Whereas Facebook, Myspace and other apps all encourage closed communities - even Moodles shut the gates on a global interaction. To me Edupunk sounds fun but only fun when I think of punk ideas like pop-satire, anti-establishment, vulgarity, progressive social attitudes, fluxus.

On DIY or DIY ethics, as might be the case with Edupunk, it is limited unless there are ways to approach the meta-ethical side to learning/teaching. If you are to be self relient, you have to have some grasp of critical thinking to justify the relation between the content and the application - and how that achieves an outcome to your learning responsibilities and the same goes for teachers.

Edupunk? Punkucation? Maybe this is the ProtoEduPunk phase of teaching and learning.

That depends. Is it going to be a conversation about education or is it going to be a conversation about school?

@Jeff @Bob

Because pointing fingers is, um, completely the point.

I don't think putting teachers or students down will improve education. This post was written with the intention of generating an intelligent conversation. Would you like to participate?

If you're really a punk, wouldn't you be self-educated?

Nice try at the punk stuff, but whining about not being included in a conversation is completely, um, missing the point. Why don't you just go do something? Punk.
