Anthony,

As I student, I am highly intrigued by the idea of a "mini-term". It sounds very similar to some colleges that have only one class for four weeks and then switch instead of more than one class each day. It expands learning and erases boundaries. I would be very grateful to have an experience like that.

When I was growing up we called your short term class shop. We also called this type of learning pursuit of a hobby. I did not need a school to allow me to pursue my interest in magic, cabinetmaking, poetry, gardening, drawing, sports, camping...etc. A few of my passions all done outside of school and the classroom. We need to encourage kids to pursue knowledge in all areas, not just school. We continue to lag behind other industrial nations in math and science, but our students are having fun.

This made me think about the 'intersessions' we have at our elementary school. Between each quarter we have one to two week sessions that are similar to your mini-term. Students choose two classes a day for that period. The classes range from photography to camping, from creating a literary magazine to making musical instruments. Sadly, in the past six years we've moved towards making these classes more like a regular school day. Your thoughts about how you would improve mini-term have given me some great food for thought as I consider the progress of our intersessions.

I would really like to do something like that at our school. Unfortunately, to my school, it's the numbers that count, not the kids. It sounds like it was an excellent learning experience.
