This is a great message. I came upon this when I was looking up my PLAR. I'm from Canada and we don't have GT classes but Gifted Program. I've been in that since Grade 6.
You can call me what most people call, the "Perfect Student". Even though we're in the Gifted Program. I'm considered the top in that. The funny thing is, I don't even know how I got that. I admit that my parents put immense pressure on me, their paradigm being "Pressure makes diamonds!" (Joy oh joy).
I don't think that I try to be ambitious; it seems like the ambition comes naturally to me. Sometimes I wonder how I can NOT go insane.
The pressure put on me by my parents is unbearable. My mom is always constantly reminding me of So and So's daughter who attends Yale from Singapore through a government sponsored scholarship and her friend's sister's daughter who got into Cornell, Penn State, Princeton, and Harvard.
I take violin, piano, and clarinet. I have dance Tuesdays and Thursdays. I have volleyball on Wednesdays. I have art class on Saturday mornings. I tutor at the library Saturday afternoons. I volunteer at the Historical Society on Sundays, and I'm planning to head to China and teach English there for 2 months. I'm Editor of our school newspaper and Student Council President. I do Cheerleading before school. I'm also President of the Chinese/Asian Society. I'm an Exec in the Yearbook Council, Animal Rights Club and some other clubs that I'm too lazy to mention.

The bottom line is, sometimes, we do so much, but we feel like we need to do more. It feels like it is never enough.

..and now I have my violin lessons to go to...joy.....

WOW!! I really enyoyed reading your post and I didn't want it to end! I totally agree with you on every aspect! I think that too many kids these days are stuck on just getting good grades and takes AP classesto get into good colleges. Having an older sister makes me realize that this just doesn't cut it anymore. Like huskrgrl said, usually the things that look good on my college resume are usually things that I like to do, so for me also it is a win-win situation. Wait to go! I am going to write a blog about this topic and if you want to comment or read it, my blog is www.academyofdiscovery.com/4ways. Kudos again!

This is totally 100% true. Today, we students need to be an amazingly overachieving person to even consider as a slight overachiever. To the average person, I may seem like someone who shine at everything and should be deemed worthy as a nerd who tries too hard when in reality, it is just middle school. But if you honestly look inside, you'll figure out that I, as well as some of my friends listed above, are just trying to reach that standard of being "above average" because we believe it will affect us in the long run. But for now, we need to understand what we are going to face up ahead in our academic lives. I am sorry to say that I am finding that I need to intensify my level of performance in order to keep my position as an overachiever. Unfortunately, I find that I have very little to boost my performance by.
This is a very good reality check for us to actually see why we put as much time and effort as we do into minuscule assignments for us to see that it is not all overlooked. Once again, great post and kudos for saying what I am afraid to consider.

I, like you and your friends, am an overachiever. I will probably take all of the extra classes in high school and everything else that is expected to get into a good school. I applied for these special groups to have a good word on my transcript but I've found that I like the activities that I've joined so it's a win-win situation. Great writing and I think that you've totally told the truth in this post.
